More fake greeting card spam
August 13, 2007
After a break for a few days, the fake greeting card spam storm has come back again. This time it is in a slightly different format, yet it still retains the familiar elements of a fake 'e-card' and a URL link with an IP address.
So far the subject lines are similar to the following:
Animated card
Animated e-card
Birthday card
Birthday postcard
Funny ecard
Greeting card
Holiday e-card
Love ecard
Movie-quality e-card
Musical postcard
Thank you card
The spam is malicious - the links point to websites hosting malicious exploits. If your computer contains a vulnerability it could result in a drive-by download where your computer may be compromised without you realising it. This spam campaign is further work of the 'Storm' gang - who have been responsible for multiple high-profile attacks of a similar nature this year. They are well known for their spam-sending activities via their botnets.
Users need to be extra vigilant. There is no attachment to click on or execute - merely a link to a website. So be extra careful in following any link in any unsolicitied email, and especially so in the case of greeting card email. Its best just to delete the message.
MailMarshal customers should note that the current SpamCensor is detecting these messages as spam and there is no need for any extra action at this time.
