M86 MailMarshal ECM (MailMarshal Exchange) uses an Agent which plugs into the Exchange Server message queue. The MailMarshal Exchange Agent retrieves messages from the Exchange queue before they reach the Exchange message store. These messages are then processed by the MailMarshal Exchange Engine which applies deep content inspection and enforces your policies. Messages that breach policy are then removed from the processing queue and are typically placed into the MailMarshal Quarantine folder. Messages which pass inspection are reinserted into the Exchange Message queue.

MailMarshal Exchange Operation

M86 MailMarshal ECM 7.0 supports Exchange Server 2010 and Exchange Server 2007. MailMarshal Exchange 5.2 supports Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2000. The specific architecture for MailMarshal Exchange integration differs slightly between versions of Exchange Server.

M86 MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange has a small impact on overall Exchange message throughput. The impact on Exchange depends on your environment and message volume. As a typical guide, expect a 15% increase in message processing time.

M86 MailMarshal ECM 7.0 is supported in the following environments:

  • Exchange Server 2007 SP2 or SP3; Exchange Server 2010 SP1

  • 8.3 file name creation must be enabled

  • Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2003 SP2, SBS 2008 SP2
  • 64-bit OS preferred (required for single-server installation)
• Console and Configurator:
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2003 SP2, SBS 2008 SP2
  • Windows XP Professional SP3 (32 bits only)
  • Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 RTM or SP1
  • 64-bit OS preferred
• Web Components:
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2003 SP2, SBS 2008 SP2

M86 MailMarshal ECM is a 32-bit application.

Note: You cannot install the M86 MailMarshal ECM Web components on Windows 2003 (IIS 6) together with Exchange 2007 Client Access Role (Outlook Web Access). Microsoft does not support side-by-side installation of 32- and 64-bit Web applications to Windows 2003. If the M86 MailMarshal ECM website is required in this scenario, install it on another server.
