MP3 spam appears

October 19, 2007

It was bound to happen - spam delivered via another email attachment type. Yesterday spam with MP3 attachments started appearing in our spam traps. The message itself contains no text, there is just an MP3 attachment which contains a highly synthesized and hard to understand voice touting penny stocks.

Analysis of the message shows The file itself does not appear to be malicious.  Also, the message shares similarities with the PDF spam blip of some weeks ago, suggesting the same group of spammers is behind both.  The number of MP3 spam we have seen is very low, although we have heard reports of significant spikes of this spam over the 24 hours.  While MP3 spam is a novel idea, and may catch some users out initially, we doubt whether it will be a long lasting phenomenon.  Nethertheless, the files are large and unweildy, and are potentially a problem for email administrators. As such we shall be monitoring developments closely.
