INFO: Upgrading from MailMarshal 6.0 to the current version

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal SMTP 6.0
  • MailMarshal 2006
  • MailMarshal SMTP 6.1.4 and above

Question:

  • Tips on upgrading MailMarshal
  • How do I upgrade to the latest version of MailMarshal?
  • What's new in MailMarshal?

Information:

Please note: This article applies specifically to issues that affect upgrades where:

  • The version being upgraded from is MailMarshal SMTP 6.0
  • The version being upgraded to is any version between 6.1.4.x and 6.7.2. (Upgrading from 6.0 to 6.8 or above must be done in two steps - first upgrade to 6.7).

For additional important information, including updated Operating System and other prerequisites, see the MailMarshal User Guide and the Release Notes for the version of MailMarshal you are installing. They are found in the installation package or on the MailMarshal documentation page: http://www.m86security.com/Support/MailMarshal-SMTP/Documentation.asp

If you are upgrading from another version, please see the following articles:

  • Q11025 Upgrading from MailMarshal 5.5 to the current version
  • Q11027 Upgrading from MailMarshal 6.1.3 to the current version

Host Validation

  • DNS validation is disabled by default in MailMarshal 6.0. Enabling DNS validation is recommended to allow better Spam filtering in the MailMarshal Engine. To enable DNS validation, see the Configurator > Server Properties > Host Validation tab. You must perform this step manually.

Data Migration

  • Data migration is NOT required. The same database is used after the upgrade.
  • Warning: running the MailMarshal Migration Tool may cause existing quarantined messages to be moved to the wrong folders. This will make quarantined messages difficult to locate and quarantine reporting data inaccurate. Once the messages are moved there is no way to reverse the process.

MailMarshal 6.0 Service Packs and Hotfixes

  • After upgrade, any service Packs and Hotfixes you installed are not removed automatically from the list in the Add/Remove Programs control panel. You do not need to take any action.
  • If you do remove these items using Add/Remove Programs, old files will be restored, and the MailMarshal services will fail to start.
  • To correct this issue, run the Mailmarshal 2006 installer in Repair mode.

Reports

The Reports upgrade prompts you to choose to overwrite the existing reports.  For the reports to run correctly, you must overwrite the existing reports. You may wish to back up any existing reports first.  When prompted to overwrite the reports:

  • Select Yes if you do not have any custom reports.
  • Select No if you want to back up any custom reports before upgrading.
  • After backing up any custom reports, upgrade to the current reports by rerunning the reports installer.
  • After upgrading Reports, you must enter the database details.  If the reports give an error when connecting to the database, try selecting the TCP/IP connection checkbox.

Web Components

The Web components installer may prompt for a system restart at the end of installation.

CountryCensor Beta

The CountryCensorBeta.dll and CountryCensorBeta.xml category file that was previously distributed by Support or Knowledge Base download is not compatible with MailMarshal 6.1.4 and above, and can cause the MailMarshal Engine to stop. Disable any rules using CountryCensor Beta, and remove the CountryCensor Beta files before upgrading. An updated version of CountryCensor is included in the upgraded MailMarshal installation.

Array Installations

If you are upgrading an array installation, the recommended order of upgrading is:

  1. Array Manager
  2. Nodes
  3. Web Components
  4. Reports and other remote user interfaces (such as Configurator and Console)

After upgrading nodes, commit configuration changes to ensure that the updated configuration is used.

Note: The nodes will not accept configuration changes from the updated Array Manager until they are updated. However they will continue to process email using the existing configuration.

Installation location

The upgrade does not change the installation location. (The default location for new installations of MailMarshal 6.1.4 and above is C:\Program Files\Marshal\MailMarshal\.)

Note:

The upgrade installation does not install any new rules. After upgrading, you can import sample rules that support the new features available in later MailMarshal versions. See the following Knowledge Base article: Q10337: How do I download new rules after upgrading MailMarshal SMTP?
