HOWTO: How do I obtain MailMarshal license keys?

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal SMTP
  • MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

  • How do I obtain MailMarshal license keys?
  • What are the types of license keys available for MailMarshal?
  • What are the MailMarshal licensing options?
  • How do I get a permanent MailMarshal license?

Procedure:

Trial Keys

Installing MailMarshal SMTP 6.X automatically generates a trial key that enables all features.

Trial keys have a fixed duration of 30 days, which starts from the time of key generation. If the product was previously installed on the same server, a shorter duration key will be created. If you have a need to trial the product for longer than 30 days, please contact your Marshal Partner for a special extended trial key.

When you install MailMarshal Exchange, or MailMarshal SMTP 5.X, you must enter a key. MailMarshal Exchange trials from the Marshal website send a key by email. If you require a trial of MailMarshal SMTP 5.X, contact Marshal for assistance.

Other than the expiration date, trial keys are not limited.

Permanent Keys

The permanent license key for most versions of MailMarshal is based on your list of domain SIDs, the computer SID, or the list of local domains as specified in MailMarshal. MailMarshal SMTP 6.1.3 keys are based on the number of email system users you have.

Tip: To view and edit local domain information in MailMarshal SMTP version 6.4 and above, see the Local Domains element in the Configurator menu tree. In other versions, see the Configurator > Server Properties, Local Domains tab.

How to get a Permanent Key
Once you have purchased MailMarshal, you need to obtain a permanent key. From the Configurator application, you can send Marshal an email containing your request.  Use the following procedure:

  1. In the Configurator Tools menu, select View License Details.
  2. Click Request Key.
  3. Specify the appropriate values to request a key. (Note: It is recommended you leave the Marshal Partner field blank as this will automatically send the request email to keyrequests@marshal.com. The requesting email address used needs to not be restricted by MailMarshal policy.) For more information about fields on a window, click Help.
  4. Click Send Request, and then click OK.
  5. The email is sent to Marshal, and will include system details that Marshal requires to generate a key.
  6. The above steps also place a copy of the system details on the Windows clipboard. If you are having trouble sending email from MailMarshal, paste the information from the clipboard, and send it to Marshal by another method.
  7. You can expect a reply from Marshal, normally within two UK business days.

What if I modify my Local Domains?
In most cases, your key is tied to your local domains. Each time you add, remove or modify your domain list after you entered your permanent key, you will need to request a new key.  MailMarshal automatically generates a 14 day temporary key when you alter your domain list to give you plenty of time.  Requesting a new permanent key costs you nothing and keys usually arrive within 24 hours of you submitting your request.

Note: You can freely change the IP addresses of the mail servers associated with these domains without needing a new key. For MailMarshal 6.1.3, you can add, delete, and modify local domains without changing your current permanent license.

If your trial key has expired, or you have altered one of your domain names, MailMarshal displays a message that notifies you whether key expiration is impending or whether the key has expired. Depending on your selection, an expired key may either stop mail throughput, or allow mail to pass through with no rule action (no virus or content scanning).

What happens if my Local Domains change all the time?
Contact Marshal or your Marshal partner to obtain a SID based key.

Marshal Add-on Modules
How can I trial additional modules such as McAfee Antivirus, PestPatrol, CounterSpy, or Image Analyzer?

  • All available add-on modules for MailMarshal are enabled by the standard trial keys.
  • If you are an existing customer with a permanent key, please contact Marshal or your Marshal partner for a special time-limited full key.

What about MailMarshal Secure?

  • Contact Marshal or your Marshal partner for a special time-limited S/MIME-enabled key (MailMarshal SMTP 5.5 only).

Upgrading from Previous MailMarshal Versions

MailMarshal 4.x customers upgrading to MailMarshal 4.2.5 and above.
If you already have a permanent key, installing a more recent version over the top will automatically issue you with a new permanent key, and no further action is required. Take note of the new key for your records.

MailMarshal 3.x customers upgrading to MailMarshal 4.2.5 and above
The key will not be automatically upgraded. Customers must request a new 4.2.5 key from Marshal Software before performing the upgrade, and then enter the new key.

Notes:

Technical support do not administer permanent keys but they can provide a time limited (temporary) key for customers still holding a current maintenance contract.
