HOWTO: How do I configure the Marshal IP Reputation Service in MailMarshal SMTP?

Question:

  • How do I configure the Marshal IP Reputation Service in MailMarshal SMTP?
  • Where can I find the credentials required to create a Marshal IP Reputation Service entry?

Procedure:

The Marshal IP Reputation Service is a DNS based Reputation Service.

The service credential is tied to your SEG/MailMarshal product key.

Product maintenance for SEG/MailMarshal is required to access to this service.

Trustwave SEG 7.3.5 and above

The service is automatically provisioned over the web. For the required URL access, see article Q12992.

  • A new installation attempts to retrieve credentials immediately.
  • If you request and install a new product key, normally the credentials will be retrieved within an hour from the time of generation of the key. You can force a check by re-entering the product key (even if the key has not changed).

SEG 7.3.0 and below

To use the service:

  1. Determine the Product Key you are actually using in MailMarshal SMTP.
  2. Browse to the Reputation Service Credentials page (requires login).
    • Note: To obtain credentials for a trial key, see the link on the reputation service page.
  3. For MailMarshal 6.7 and above:
    1. Copy the Customer Number and Activation Code for the key.
    2. In the MailMarshal Configurator, create a new Reputation Service.
    3. In the wizard, select Marshal IP Reputation Service.
    4. Enter the Customer Number and Activation Code that match the key in use.
    5. Complete the wizard and commit configuration.
    6. Use the new Reputation Service:
      • In Receiver Rules, using the condition Where sender's IP address is listed by reputation service.
      • In Standard Rules, using the condition Where message is categorized as 'Marshal Blacklisted'.
  4. For MailMarshal SMTP 6.4 and 6.5:
    • Note: Versions 6.4 and 6.5 require an updated version of the file SpamChecker.dll. This file is provided through the SpamCensor updater service. Ensure that SpamCensor is up to date before enabling the Marshal Reputation Service.
      1. Download and save the MarshalRBL.xml file that matches the key in use.
      2. Place this file in the Config folder in the MailMarshal installation on the Array Manager server.
      3. Create a new Standard Rule using the condition Where message is categorized as 'Marshal RBL Blacklisted'.
      4. Commit configuration.
    • For these versions, the service is available in Standard (Engine) rules only.

    Notes:

    • To use this service effectively you may need to define which server addresses are looked up by using custom attributes such as SkipFirstIPs or SkipLastIPs.See the MailMarshal Advanced anti-spam whitepaper, available on the MailMarshal documentation page.
    • If you change the MailMarshal product key, you must update the Marshal Reputation Service credentials to match the new key.
    • When you upgrade from an earlier version to version 6.7, the file MarshalRBL.xml will be overwritten during the upgrade of the processing node servers. The upgrade process saves Customer Number and Activation Code credentials to the Registry, and makes a copy of the file in the NodeConfig folder as MarshalRBL.xml.bak. To recover any additional custom attributes such as SkipFirstIPs, copy this information from the file MarshalRBL.xml.bak on each processing node server after upgrading.
    • If the Customer Number and Activation Code are present in both the Registry and MarshalRBL.xml, MailMarshal will use the information from MarshalRBL.xml.
